This definitive green stamp features an intricate engraving of a historic enameled glass mosque lamp, dating back to the Mamluk period (c. 13th–14th century). Suspended by decorative chains, these lamps traditionally featured calligraphic inscriptions frequently from the "Verse of Light"(Ayat an-Nur) from the Quran and sophisticated arabesque motifs. Issued under the official inscription of the United Arab Republic (UAR / الجمهورية العربية المتحدة), a political union between Egypt and Syria established in 1958, the stamp was overprinted with the bilingual text "PALESTINE / فلسطين" for postal service in the Gaza Strip. The design uses a classic emblem of medieval Islamic craftsmanship to link the administrative authority in Cairo with the cultural and architectural heritage of the region.
