This commemorative plum-colored stamp was originally issued in 1958 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948–1958 / ١٩٤٨-١٩٥٨). The central design features a portrait of the distinguished French jurist René Cassin, one of the principal authors of the declaration and later a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The portrait is flanked by a flaming torch of liberty on the left and the official emblem of the United Nations on the right. Bearing the country name of the United Arab Republic (UAR), this stock was stamped with a green, bilingual "PALESTINE / فلسطين" overprint for official postal circulation within the Gaza Strip, using an international humanitarian milestone to maintain local mail operations.
